Tulum Was a Major Maya Port Built as a key port for Coba, one of the major cities in the Maya kingdom in the 13th century, Tulum continued to be a functioning. It's estimated that the building of the city began sometime in the A.D. 6th century, during what is known as the Classic Period for the Maya. The site was occupied from around AD to the early 16th century when it was abandoned due to disease and warfare with other tribes.
